WILLIAM SAROYAN THEATRE

“A Midsummer Night’s Dream” is a ballet adapted from Shakespeare’s play of the same name. The most popular version is Frederick Ashton’s 1964 production titled “The Dream”. It was premiered that year by The Royal Ballet at The Royal Opera House, Covent Garden in London. “The Dream” is set to Mendelssohn’s music arranged by John Lanchbery.

Another version of “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” is choreographed by George Balanchine and is a two-act ballet set also to Felix Mendelssohn’s music but incorporates other works by the same composer. “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” by George Balanchine was presented in April, 1964 for the New York City Ballet’s first season.
